This adorable vintage cat hand puppet from Steiff dates back to the second half of the 20th century, although an exact year has proven difficult to determine through initial research. Discovered at a brocante fair in the south of the Netherlands, it came from the loving home of a Steiff fan. With more than one style of puppet available, these are priced individually for collectors wishing to add to or complete their personal collections. However, a 10% discount will be provided to customers who purchase two or more. Please message us before purchase for the discount code.

In good condition, there are signs of being well loved throughout the years. The stitching still maintains good structural integrity and the Steiff tag is intact. All signs of wear are commensurate with use and age. Please refer carefully to the photos and video as part of the description.

Steiff is a German-based plush toy company that was founded in 1880 by seamstress, Margarete Steiff. She originally sold pincushions shaped like elephants, however as children tended to play with them, she turned to designing soft animal toys instead.

In 1902, Steiff began producing a jointed bear that was exhibited at the Leipzig Toy Fair in early 1903. Coincidentally, it late 1902, an incident occurred involving President Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt and an American black bear. The incident inspired a cartoon that fueled a "teddy bear" craze in the U.S. When a buyer for an American toy company noticed the Steiff bear at the toy fair, he seized the opportunity to place an order for 3,000 of them. By 1907, Steiff had manufactured over 970,000 bears.

The metal "Button in Ear" Steiff tag was devised in 1904 to help identify counterfeits and is generally placed in the ear of the animal when ears are visible/available. While the stamp and logo has changed through the years, the metal tag is still used today. Steiff continues to manufacture teddy bears, celebrating 120 years of production in 2022, as well as other stuffed animals and toys. The have also expanded into children's fashion and a Steiff museum can be visited in southern Germany.
