The view master was first introduced at the New York World's Fair (1939-1940.) The View-Master was invented by Wilhelm Gruber and made by Sawyer's Photo Services, to replace, or at least compliment, the everyday postcard. The device showed stereoscopic three-dimensional pictures. Originally intended as an educational device for adults, the view master soon become a popular children's toy in the 1940s. It was met with moderately good reception.
The US Army realized that the View-Master could help train troops, so they ordered hundreds of thousands of them. This money gave Sawyeru2019s what they needed to dominate the View-Master market for the next 40 years. They were also very popular for the troops to use instead of magazines. Shortly after 1950, Sawyeru2019s bought Tru-Vue, the other competitor, and with it got the rights to Disneyu2019s stuff.
