Beautiful pair of large vintage Indonesian "Wayang Golek" stick puppets, found and flogged in France. Two traditional Javanese theatre puppets, estimated from the 1960s. There is a male and a female figure, they are in excellent condition throughout, and measure 20.25 & 21.5 inches respectively plus the arm control sticks, which hang a little lower than the bottom of the clothing.
Their traditional patterned costumes are not lavishly decorated like later examples tend to be, they are more a snapshot of traditional Indonesian theatre from 60 or so years ago than tourist souvenirs. The woodwork is hand detailed, and they are fully operational, with a little practice you can get them moving in a surprisingly expressive way.
The Wayang Golek puppet shows are a big part of Javanese culture. There are about 90 different dolls, the kids know all their names and are familiar with the characters. As with all good dramas, there are heroes and villains. These two are obviously goodies, the baddies can be quite alarming to behold. We read that one man operates the whole puppet show, quite a difficult job I imagine.
