Highlights

Description

Here we have a beautiful Bicolor Boule Lyonnaise, a type of Petanque Ball from Lyon with the Initials u201cJ.R` nailed into an authentic Boxwood core. This is a handmade ball used for playing Petanque or u201cBoules Lyonnaises` (Bocce as the Italians would call it).

Before petanque balls were mass-produced, they were hand made, carved from the roots of the Boxwood shrub. This is a great example of that old method and makes a great addition to any rustic setting, Mediterranean or South of France themed space or boules fan.

USAGE (then and now)

To play boules! Though this one would go great as a decoration, it is also ready for a game.

As we said, this is technically a Boule Lyonnaise, which is similar to Petanque (a game originally from Marseilles) however slightly different. The way to tell these types of balls apart is that Boules Lyonnaises are heavier and larger than Petanque balls.

Today it makes a beautiful decor object on a library or a table. Boules like these are often time collected as they are unique and everyone of them is different!

WHAT MAKES THIS PIECE UNIQUE (assembly, condition)

This ball is in great condition and bicolor uniquely featuring the players initials u201cJ.R` in gold nails which contrasts the silver metal wonderfully.

The nails are precisely inserted and round in shape rather than square which gives a more rustic look. Great for display.

Petanque balls were traditionally carved from the root of the Boxwood shrub and subsequently finely pierced with nails all around until you had a robust ball for playing! Boxwood shrubs are a staple of the south of France and itu2019s interesting to see how resourceful they were to create a game using the natural resources they had access to. You donu2019t have to be a big fan of Petanque or Bocce to appreciate this craftsmanship.
