Description

There is a story and I would like to share it with you.

Although made in 1965 these knives have never been used. They were made by The Britannia Silver Company who made everything in Britannia silver, a very high quality form of solid silver. Whereas solid silver, as we mostly know it, is 92.5% pure Britannia silver is a massive 95.8% pure. All silver has to be alloyed with a little copper or it is too soft and Sterling Silver, the silver of the old coins was 92.5%.

The Britannia Story itself is noteworthy and of important historical interest. Silverware as far back as 1300 was made of Sterling 925/1000 as was the coin of the realm. Silver was in demand and with a short supply the price was rising (INFLATION). One did not have to look too far for an alternative supply - the coin of the realm! By 1696 the practice had grown to an extent that action had to be taken; and so it was that a law was passed that all silverware had to be made of Britannia silver to protect the coinage and was obligatory until things had settled down in 1720.

The Britannia Silver Company only had quality in mind, in fact they concentrated so hard on very high quality that they became uncompetitive in price and so it was that I, with my grandfather, in 1968 went to an auction and purchased their entire stock which over the years I have been slowly selling. The price at which we offer this knife is probably less than half what it would cost if it had to be made today.

So here you have it. A magnificent purpose-made wedding cake knife, presented in a beautiful fitted case, that you can personalise with engraving to remind you of the day.

The knife has a point for piercing the hardest icing and a very fine serrated edge for slicing, without damaging, the cake.
