Description

Unique handmade gum print (gum bicromate) technique, especially favoured by the Pictorialists at the turn of the 1800s and 1900s. The image is of old tree in Noormarkku, Finland, printed on high quality Somerset paper. Three overlapping colours have been used; ivory black, burnt umber and Prussian blue.

Paper size is 38 x 28 cm, image size 22 x 16.5 cm.

This is an artist's proof with brush marks and calibration bars visible around the image. These can be easily hidden by using a matboard to frame the image; a suggested solution is shown in the attached picture. Please note that the matboard is NOT INCLUDED in the order, you will only receive the print.

Gum bichromate is a historical printmaking technique in which paper is sensitised to light with a mixture of gum arabic, dichromate and pigment (usually watercolour). The sensitised paper is exposed to UV light (sun or UV lamp) in contact with a negative. One colour at a time can be printed; for multi-colour prints each colour is exposed and processed separately, always on top of the previous one. The end result is a highly stable coloured print, composed of pigments and gum arabic, hardened by exposure to light.
