This is a very charming and well carved scenic cameo brooch dating back to the mid Victorian era. The unmarked but tested sterling silver mount is more modern, from around the 1940u2019s or thereabouts. The shell carving is very beautiful, detailed and in high relief. Scenic cameos are not very common and ones showing a courting couple are certainly hard to come by, especially carved as well as this one. The lovely young lady is wearing a tunic and is bare footed, she looks like a country girl. Her beau on the other hand looks more well dressed and I canu2019t help wondering if these two are star-crossed lovers form different classes perhaps? In any case, the young man seems to be quite besotted with the girl and may well be proposing to her in this wonderful scene. The skilled carver has included a lot of detail, which is still surprisingly crisp for its age, and left a signature on the back.

The cameo may be worn as a brooch or pendent. It is set into an unmarked but tested sterling silver frame that is from a different era as it is more modern than the Sardonyx shell cameo. The piece is a good size being circa 5cms by 4.5cms. The cameo fastens by means of a safety roll over clasp and pin whilst there is also a bale for use as a pendent. The overall condition of the cameo is very good with the shell being thick and strong sitting firmly in the bezel. There seems to be some glue around the frame on the back but it is very hard to see with the naked eyes. There is a small internal line that is not a crack and does not detract from the beauty of this very delightful and highly wearable collectoru2019s piece. A very sweet cameo.
