George of Lydda (c. 275/280 - April 23, 303), Saint George, is a martyr of the 5th century, according to the continuing tradition of the Catholic Church and the various Orthodox Churches. He is the patron saint, among other things, of Christian chivalry, of the Kingdom of England since the year 800, of Georgia, of Scouting and of gunsmiths. Furthermore, many localities are named after him. According to Christian tradition, he is cousin with the isapostle Saint Nino. He is mainly represented as a knight who defeats a dragon and is thus an allegory of the victory of the Christian faith over the devil or more broadly of good over evil.
The cross of Saint George adorns the Sardinian flag in the center of the four Moorish heads. Peter I of Aragon, whose patron saint it is, repelled the Moors in 1096 during the reconquista.

He is honored on April 23 or November 3 (translation of the relics and dedication of the church of Lydda (present-day Lod), in the 4th century), and on November 23 in Georgia.
