About Najeon Art:
-A Masterpiece of Korean Craftsmanship and Culture-

Najeon Chilgi, the wooden lacquerware inlaid with Mother-of-Pearl, is a masterpiece of Korean craftsmanship and culture that demands skill, patience and dedication. The art of Najeon Chilgi is used to make items from jewelry boxes to chests, dressers and desks. It is also a cultural asset of Korea that reflects the ancient wisdom and beauty of the Korean people.

-A Long and Complex Process-

To make a Najeon Chilgi product, the artisan has to go through a long and complex process that consists of more than twenty steps. The process can be roughly divided into five stages:
1. pasting hemp cloth on the surface of the wooden frame to make it smooth and sturdy,
2. coating the surface with natural lacquer, a sap extracted from lacquer trees that has a glossy and durable quality,
3. spraying powdered ox bone on the surface to create a fine texture and a white background for the mother-of-pearl,
4.inlaying the patterned mother-of-pearl on the pitch black background, cutting and fitting the shells with delicate tools and techniques,
5. and then repetition of lacquering and polishing to enhance the shine and smoothness of the product. It takes 3~6 months to complete a product.

-The Beauty and Rarity of Mother of Pearl-

The most distinctive feature of Najeon Chilgi is the use of mother-of-pearl, which is considered to be the jewel of the Orient. Mother-of-pearl is made from the shining, unchangeable beauty of pearl oyster or abalone shells, a rare and precious material. The mother-of-pearl inlays create a mesmerizing effect that changes colors and patterns depending on the angle, time, place and light.
