HISTORY

The Sugrau00f1es firm certified, in other times, beautiful jewels of religious manifestation. That past is endorsed by documents, photographs and correspondence jealously kept in a blue folder. There, on yellowing papers, with pen and fountain pen inks, was left the story of the crown made by Josu00e9 Sugrau00f1es, which was offered to the Virgen de los Desamparados, in 1923, in the solemn act where Alfonso XIII and the Queen were present . Victoria Eugene.

The donors are cited in an endless list, and the summary of the work reads: "4,835 diamonds, 3,082 roses, 556 pearls, 16 emeralds, 7 amethysts, 8 topazes, 4 opals, 60 pearls and sapphires were set. 6,105 precious stones were mounted and the other 2,568 correspond to unmodified pieces" (earrings and brooches).

After the war, the crown was reproduced again -although made of gilt silver and with less precious stones-, but with the same goldsmith work that chisels, engraves and sets. Those in of such delicate work were the sons of Josu00e9 Sugrau00f1es, Jesu00fas and Rafael; and the new coronation was held in May 1941.

When I did the report, the jewelry store was run by the founder's grandson, Fernando Sugrau00f1es Puchol, and his wife, Teresa Garu00eda, who had created a section dedicated to Valencian costumes. The house, which was originally located on Calle de Zaragoza, turned 1960 and perfectly preserved the original Empire-style decoration.

In showcases, chests of drawers and ewers you could admire garments that have been rescued from closets and trunks sometimes condemned to oblivion.

The Sugrau00f1es did not lack bibliographic documentation such as the book by Almela and Vives 'The history of the Valencian farmer's dress', or 'El amor de un torrenti', by Paula Rochano, as well as the study they have carried out on the costumes that Benlliure painted in 'The Bobbin Lacemaker' and 'The Peasant's Food'. Likewise, the collection of customary engravings is important, which provide fidelity of dressings and accessories. A lived time.
