Description

Antique Victorian pendant featuring large oval locket set in yellow rolled gold. The interior of the locket has a hinged glass window, with a beautiful ornate design. The pendant hangs from a new 9ct yellow gold chain.

Rolled gold is a hybrid metal consisting a thick layer of gold that is fused by heat to create one or both sides of a base metal of brass or copper. Usually rolled gold consists of 5% gold. This process was patented in England in 1817; it became popular in the 1920's and 1930's and was used in high quality vintage jewellery. Rolled gold is better quality than gold plated jewellery.

The Locket is perhaps the most mysterious and alluring pieces of jewellery. Only the wearer knows what secrets lie within the locket. It has to be the ultimate love token. During the Victorian era, young Victorian women would hide a picture of a man they admired, if the man offered up a lock of hair a marriage proposal usually would follow. Lockets were considered a statement of an intention to marry.
