Description

This stunning locket features a beautiful hand-painted cameo portrait of a lady on porcelain, set in solid sterling. The portrait is surrounded by a halo of seed pearls and is adorned by an ornate bale with even more pave-set pearls! The reverse reveals the secret locket compartment hidden behind the lady. The locket compartment lid lifts off completely from the body, rather than the traditional hinged locket-back. The symbolism of pearls, portrait and secret locket back lead me to believe this locket may have been a mourning piece - pearls have long been used to symbolize the tears of those experiencing loss, adorning mourning jewelry like sparkling teardrops. There are two stamps on the bale that I've been unable to make out, but the locket tests positively for sterling silver. The locket has been paired with a vintage matching sterling chain with a spring ring clasp. The piece is likely French in origin, with extraordinary attention to detail apparent in every aspect: immaculately set pearls, finely depicted portrait, perfectly working locket back and all original components centuries later. The craftsmanship is exquisite and the condition is mint, a stunning, tiny work of wearable art.

Integral to the essence of most vintage items is the notion that they are previously owned (and often previously loved) pieces. By virtue of this fact, none of my items are flawless; I do my best to disclose any and all faults Iu2019m aware of. I aim to accurately represent the true colours of the jewelry I photograph. Please allow for some colour discrepancies due to photography lighting, monitor tint etc. I would never intentionally misrepresent any of my items.
