Description

A delightful antique Victorian rectangular gold filled and onyx locket or pocket watch fob. To the front an onyx panel with a central shield-shaped cartouche with a crown and sprays of laurel. The reverse in plain onyx.
To the inside is space for two photographs or lock of hair, with both frames and the original glass.
With an oval bail.
The locket is unmarked.
The chain is not included.
Germany 1880s.

The space for the photographs 2.1cm x 1.5cm. In inches 5/8".

Queen Victorian encouraged the wearing of photographic jewelry after the death of Prince Albert in 1861.

This could of course be a mourning locket but the use of onyx can also be purely decorative. In overall good antique condition with a dent and wear to the shield cartouche. But with both frames and glass.
This locket closes firmly.
