Description

An exquisite antique 14K gold rounded rectangular swivel locket set with onyx and obsidian panels, in a rose gold tone. Set to the front with a rectangular obsidian intaglio panel, 1.4cm x 0.9cm, very finely carved with a classical warrior with a plumed helmet looking to the right and accentuated through the concave surround. Within a wide gold filled mount with reticulated decoration and reeded edges.
The reverse with a rectangular onyx panel, 2cm x 1cm, within a plain mount with reeded edges.
With a scrolled wire work mount. With pins to the side allowing the locket to revolve. Revolve to open, the opening being hidden beneath the scrolled mount!
Opening to reveal space for 2 rounded rectangular photographs, complete with frames and glass coverings.
Unmarked but acid tested as 14K gold, 585 standard gold.

Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock and has a glassy appearance.
These lockets are reputedly mourning jewels to commemorate those fallen in the Franco/Prussian War, July 1870 ? 10. May 1871.

A unusual and striking piece of antique jewelry in very good antique condition. In a coppery rose gold complete with both frames and glass. Easy to open and closes firmly.
