Description

This is a Lovely Broth Cooking Pot with a sturdy copper handle and elegant shape. It dates back to the 18th century in France and is a great demonstration of the variation and creativity that come from handmade copper pots and pans like this at the time. Produced under the era of King Louis XV, at a time where the first cooking pots made out of copper were first created.

USAGE (then and now)

In traditional French cuisine, broth is the foundation from which various dishes are built on top. Making a good broth from meat and vegetables was detrimental to add delicious aromas to every dish. A copper sauce pot like this would have been used to heat a small amount of broth and then poured into the dish being cooked.

Today you could also cook with it, the tinning is in good condition but would likely need a touch up as weu2019re unsure of the recency. Equally charming would be to use it as a decorative item set in a rustic house, kitchen or fireplace.

WHAT MAKES THIS PIECE UNIQUE (assembly, condition)

The uniqueness of the shape and function of the pot makes this piece rare and interesting and charming all at once. Thatu2019s what makes objects from the past like this so interesting.

Equally interesting are the dovetails, or seams where the copper was bound together with brass brazing. It circles the bottom and runs down the side. This demonstrates where the copper sheets were bound together by the coppersmith who made this. (As can be seen on the pictures).

Keep in mind that copper pots and pans were extremely expensive at the time and would have only been used in grand estates or castles. French coppers that have survived the century are therefore very rare! Not only very few were made at the time but also a great amount of them was melted down during both world wars.

Itu2019s a quality piece that weu2019d love to see go to someone who appreciates its history and, with little care, will ensure it lives another few hundred years!
