Arabia
Arabia is a Finnish brand for porcelain and glassware. The company was founded in 1873 as a branch of Swedish Ru00f6rstrand for the export of porcelain to Russia and in 1874 production began. The first manager was the foreman J. H. Herlenius, transferred from Ru00f6rstrand. From Ru00f6rstand also came Arabia's first technical director, Gustaf Herlitz, who in 1892 became manager and in 1916 was succeeded by his son Carl-Gustaf Herlitz (1882?1961). The products were models taken from Ru00f6rstrand's standard range. Several of the vase models had been designed by Alf Wallander and Hugo Hu00f6rlin. The first artistic employee was Thure u00d6berg in 1896. He was responsible for Arabia's success at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and later took over the management of objets d'art production, a position he held until 1932. During this time, Finnish designers such as Helena Wilenius and Usko and Hjalmar Nystru00f6m were also temporary employees at Arabia. The company passed into Finnish ownership in 1916.
