A pair of unusual and fabulous buttons - cufflinks? Waist coat or collar buttons? I'm not sure. Both buttons have two shanks that are pushed in opposite directions to lie flat. I've only ever seen one other like this and that seller was just as mystified as I! The faces of the buttons have two highly decorated edges, which almost makes them look like a 2D representation of a cube. The center motif features a sickle, cutting a single stalk if wheat. The edge and frame is rose gold, the back ground is yellow, the sickle is white gold or silver, and the wheat is green gold. I haven't tested for quality but I believe these to be gold fill or rolled gold.

This is only a theory, but I could see these going back to the Populist Movement of the late 1800s, which coincides with their Arts and Crafts styling. At that time, farming groups and industrial organizations were gaining power in the American political landscape. Conversely, the sickle and wheat motif is also a symbol sometimes used in Victorian mourning jewelry - a life cut short, etc.

Condition is good, very little surface wear to the front. The shanks have some wear and dark spots but work well. They have a nice size, about .75 inches tall, and are ao striking. An excellent addition to a collection.
These will be shipped inside a little gift box, ready for gift giving. Domestic shipping is for priority with insurance.
